October 04, 2018 – RE: Government of Ontario Halting the Ontario Special Investigation Unit Act

Dear Sir/Madam:

Thank you for your emailed letter, sharing your views of the Justice for Abdirahman Coalition regarding the proposed changes to police oversight in Ontario.

As you are aware, our government has paused the implementation of the previous government’s Bill 175 to allow for time to conduct a full and thorough review of the legislation by consulting with experts, police services, and the public. We feel that it is important to get this right the first time, so your input is extremely valuable.

This is part of our commitment to improve the Police Services Act to better respect our frontline officers and to ensure that confidence in police is not undermined. Our government believes that Ontarians should never feel unsafe when interacting with the people who protect us.

I am committed to working with our community and justice partners to deliver a justice system for the people that is fair, responsible and efficient.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Caroline Mulroney
Attorney General
