The Justice for Abdirahman Coalition strongly condemns the recent acts of hate directed at members of the Jewish community in our city. It is disturbing to see such despicable acts directed at our friends and neighbours simply because of their identity. We stand in solidarity with them, and call on anyone who has information about these crimes to inform the authorities promptly.
Sadly, these latest acts in Ottawa follow a number of other troubling incidents in recent days, in a number of cities across the country, involving displays and acts of hate directed at certain communities. As Canadians, we have a duty and a responsibility to take a strong stand against all forms of hate. Additionally, the government has an obligation to ensure that hate crimes directed at Canadians will be investigated and punished. It is not enough to celebrate our diversity. We must defend it against those who want to weaken it.
Finally, we remind those in positions of responsibility to remember that words have consequences, and that political discourse that stigmatizes certain groups and communities not only creates division and suspicion between Canadians, but helps provide the fuel for the kinds of hateful acts we have seen recently.
